Design and Technology - In Perfect Harmony

Design and Technology - In Perfect Harmony A part of VAIO’s product planning division for two years, Mr. Goto had overseen the complete development – from conceptualisation till the finished product – of two series of VAIO: the world’s first Blu-ray Disc™ notebook, the VAIO AR, and the latest, luxuriously mobile VAIO TZ. Although differing greatly in design, both were designed to meet the needs of a similar user: educated, successful, mobile and one whom appreciates the finer things in life.

An interesting fact revealed to us about the design of the VAIO TZ during initial conceptualisation stages was that it was to have a boxier shape. And although this design was given the go-ahead for production, Mr. Goto – and his dedicated team of designers and engineers – withdrew their initial design and continued working on giving the VAIO TZ a more organic appearance. “While we are engineers and designers, we are first and foremost consumers. If an original design fails to ‘wow’ us, then we will continue to persevere until such a design is realised. We call this satisfied craftsmanship”, explained Mr. Goto.

That is why every VAIO is so much more than the impressive hardware it features. Technology, design and functionality – all come together in beautiful harmony in the VAIO – to create a direct, personal contact with the user. Giving every VAIO user a pride of ownership as a result. This philosophy has guided VAIO through its first ten years, and Mr. Goto highlighted that VAIO users can look forward to a greater variety of products in the next decade – each customised to meet the demands of new lifestyles.

When asked if there was an artist or designer whose work he admired, Mr. Goto replied, “Dr. (Austrian Ferdinand) Porsche”. Founder of the Porsche brand of sports car, and creator of the first Volkswagen, Dr. Porsche was able to harmonise technology and design beautifully in the automobile. In the arena of notebook design, we know the same can be expected for the VAIO.
